Private medical insurance policies traditionally just cover acute conditions, which tend to be curable in the short term. It has been common practice within the health insurance industry to deny cover to diseases like diabetes, asthma or arthritis which cannot be cured.
However some companies have started to show more flexibility. Premier Choice Group has started setting up a small allowance each year to cover the costs of annual check-up whereas AXA PPP healthcare pays for follow up checks in some invasive cancer cases.
These are good news for both patients and health insurers alike, as monitoring regularly chronic diseases minimises the risk of more serious conditions happening in the future and subsequently more expensive claims.
